10 Things to know before your first Pilates class

Starting something new always comes with a little uncertainty. And when it comes to Pilates, it’s natural to wonder what to expect, especially if you’ve never gone to a class before. Whether you're looking to build strength, improve flexibility, or simply find some peace in your day, Pilates has something for everyone, and it’s for every body.

Here’s everything you need to know before stepping into your first Pilates class.

1. You don’t need to be “fit”

Pilates is for all levels, and instructors are there to guide you every step of the way with modifications and different layers based on your capability. No matter what your fitness level is, the focus is on form and breath, and you’ll be encouraged to go at your own pace.

2. Wear Comfy clothing

Opt for form-fitting clothes like leggings and a loose top. And don’t forget socks, grippy socks are ideal for added traction.

3. What to Bring

A water bottle is always a good idea to stay hydrated. Everything else (mat and props) will be provided in studio.

4. Arrive 10 mins early.

Give yourself some time to settle in. Arriving 10–15 minutes early lets you get comfortable with the space, set up your equipment, and ask the instructor any questions about the class. If you’re feeling nervous, a quick chat with your instructor can help calm your mind and ease any first-day jitters.

5. Speak Up

If you have any injuries, concerns, pregnancy, or conditions, don’t hesitate to speak up before or during class. Pilates is highly adaptable, and instructors can offer modifications to suit your needs, ensuring you’re moving safely and comfortably.

6. It’s All About Quality, Not Quantity

Pilates focuses on small, controlled movements that target deep muscle groups. It might not feel like you're doing "a lot" at first, but trust us, quality always trumps quantity. Listen to your body and take breaks as needed. The slow, deliberate movements will build up strength over time.

7. Focus on Your Breathing

Breath is central to Pilates. Inhale to prepare, and exhale to engage your core. A lot of people get caught up in trying to make the movements look a certain way, but remembering to breathe and connect with your body is more important than perfection.

8. Expect a Full-Body Workout

Pilates is designed to strengthen your entire body, from head to toe. It focuses on core strength, flexibility, and posture, and many exercises will engage your whole body, even if you’re targeting one specific area. It’s normal to feel your muscles working in ways you’re not used to.

9. Listen to Your Body

This is key. Pilates is not about pushing yourself to the limit. If something doesn’t feel right or is causing pain, stop and ask for help. Your instructor is there to ensure you’re moving safely and with proper form. It’s better to take it slow and work up to more challenging exercises than to risk injury by overdoing it.

10. Trust the Process

Pilates is a practice, not a performance. Results may take time, and that's perfectly okay. If you leave your first class feeling challenged but excited, that’s a win! The more you practice, the stronger and more confident you’ll feel.

Pilates offers so much for your body and mind. So relax, breathe, and know that you’re doing something great for yourself. The journey starts with that first step, and we can’t wait to be a part of it!
